Breakthrough Moments

This email topic feels big to write about. 

I wrote the subject and then I just kind of sat here thinking for a moment. 

What I want to share with you today is about determination, motivation and, I guess, working for those breakthrough moments. 

I recently had what seems to be a pretty big breakthrough. 

It started by my listening to the audio book “The eMyth Revisited” which I had heard I should read many times over the years but never actually got to doing so. I just find audiobooks so much easier at the moment so I have an Audible account that kind of forces me to pick one book per month since I pay for it – works for me. 

Anyway – in the eMyth there was a line that stuck out to me SO MUCH that I actually sent an email to my friend and accountability partner Cindy Bidar about it. 

It was this:
“Your business is nothing but a direct reflection of who you are.”


I know some of you may admire what I’ve done to date but when I read that all I could think of was what I HADN’T done yet. My initial reaction was to send it to Cindy because she’s the consistency queen. She built a membership to over 400++ members and multiple six figures and that – I have not done YET. So I feel like I haven’t gotten “there” yet in many ways and I was feeling the PINCH when I emailed Cindy about it. 

I won’t share our whole back and forth conversation about it but I have to tell you that by the time we finished email I think I was in FULL breakthrough mode. By the way Cindy isn’t offering coaching (before you ask) but she has an amazing membership called Six Figure Systems and if she’s sounding like an awesome person to learn from – SHE IS – and you can learn more about Cindy here

I’m assuming your wondering what my breakthrough was – here it is:

My business WILL work if I consistently build on what works and improve upon what works. It’s as simple as that. No emotions needed. It’s MATH. 

And the part where Cindy told me “it’s just Math” is when something in my brain clicked.

Let me give you an example in Party Plan Divas. 

I bought Divas for $1000 when it was making $200/month in ads and had no other revenue. We lost the ads in the site transfer and I wasn’t interested in pursuing ad revenue (see my blog post about why I hate reading blogs with ads). 

So I did what I know works – I started creating digital products and selling them. I created a recurring revenue stream with a subscription – the Diva Success Club. I emailed my list daily with those offers. 

That’s NOT complicated. 

When I get X number of people to open the emails, they click the links to the products and they buy it or join the club. Repeat, repeat, repeat. The list is actually growing on it’s own through opt-ins on the site (it gets decent traffic) so this is a FULL and complete system that I can use to grow this business – and I am! 

The breakthrough for me is that I LOVE to try new things, I LOVE to build new websites and I LOVE to doubt myself. I think something is not working and instead of giving it the chance to build momentum I’ll try something else. Like I tried to sell Party Plan Divas for $53 and then dropped it to $23 because I was getting impatient – that’s a prime example. I came to my senses and put it back up and realized that I was acting on EMOTION, not LOGIC. 

Those of us who are empaths – who run on emotion – can run our businesses on emotions, too – what’s fun, what’s new, what’s interesting. I LOVE my emotional part but it’s run a bit wild over the least few years. I’m sure Covid hasn’t helped! 

So here’s where I land with all of this and how it impacts my business moving forward:

  • I am fully responsible for where I am in business at the moment and I own that (I actually really LOVE where I’m at, too, so I’m good with that). 
  • I have a PEACE in knowing it works – it almost ALL works and if not you tweak it until it does. I can stop second-guessing myself and just live in the confidence that things will continue to work, people will continue to want things and I will never lose the skill of being able to show up and help people get what they need. 
  • It’s MATH. If I get 100 people to a salespage that converts at 10% I get 10 sales. It’s my job to get more people to that salespage if I want more sales. Simple as that. And that doesn’t need to happen overnight (and rarely does). I can build it day by day, consistent activity by consistent activity. 

This was my pre-spring 2022 breakthrough. I don’t have a name for it but I’m pretty sure it’s changed me. I thought I’d share in case you get some value out of this and can see yourself in some part of it. If you didn’t I’m sorry you read all this for nothing I’m sorry, lol!

Minimalist Marketing & Life

Hey .

Minimalism is so attractive, isn’t it?

Less stuff.
Less to take care of.
Less to manage.
Less to organize.

When I look at what I’ve been doing lately there are things that fit minimalism and things that don’t.

Things that don’t fit:

Mainly I’m thinking what doesn’t fit right now is that I want to do a lot of things, as always.

I have PartyPlanDivas.com and I have made some really good plans for how to kick it up a notch with this site this year if I don’t find the right buyer.

I have been emailing here at AngelaWills.com and I’d like to start blogging, again, here, too. Fun fact: My first blog post EVER was on AngelaWills.com and the subject was “Poker. I won!” . It’s not published anymore. It was on Blogger. I was playing poker with my family and won is the long and short of that story, lol.

Then of course I bought Brand Springboard – a buy and sell site of sorts.

AND I have my ChasingVegan.com site which I actually published a new blog post to yesterday.

Nothing about all those sites and content and streams of income is minimal.

But maybe that’s why minimalism is so attractive to me in OTHER spaces of my life.

Things I’m doing to create a Minimalist Life & Business:

Minimalist Facebook

Two days ago (or was it yesterday) I unfriended EVERYONE on Facebook except my Mom and Matt (hubby). I even unfriended my son but then when I got to Mom I couldn’t do it so I asked Hayden to friend me back, lol.

The solution of unfriending everyone rather than closing down my account allows me to run the Facebook group and page for PartyPlanDivas.com

It was a good choice.

It was a SIGH of relief.

Now there’s no noisy feed filled with everyone’s lives that I can’t help myself to peek at – there’s nothing to peek at – minimalist.

Minimalist Wardrobe

Another minimalist thing I have wanted to do for YEARS is a capsule wardrobe. I’m going to give it a go, tonight. I’m going a step further even and go for a bit of a “uniform” wardrobe.

Tonight I will wash up all my laundry and PACKUP everything except for seven outfits. That’s it, one for each day. JUST enough for each day so I have to wash every single Sunday. I’m going to keep it pretty uniform so there are no decisions to be made about what to wear.

I just need to decide if my uniform is jeans or leggings. It’s a tough decision because I can do everything in leggings. But do I like that look more than the jeans and dark t-shirt look I’ve liked most of my life? I shall decide tonight!

Minimalist Household (not counting kids stuff)

Yet another minimalist thing I like to do is not buy stuff. LOL. I don’t like decorations or trinkets or even stuff on my walls. It makes it easy and it feels less cluttered to me. Plus, our house is small and I feel like the more stuff we add the smaller it gets.

Minimalist WordPress

I’ve been CLEANING out my WordPress installs and starting new ones LEAN.

I created this site for a client using just the free version of Astra:

I wasn’t sure it would be possible to create a good looking site on a free theme but it is – and now we don’t need a complicated website builder like Thrive Themes or Elementor. Just a simple free theme and a focus on the content and we’re good to go.

Minimalist Marketing

Now I get attracted to shiny new marketing methods. Right now I’m interested in how to get traffic from Pinterest and how to do SEO for traffic and sales, etc.

When it comes down to it, though, there has and probably always will be one main marketing method that NEVER lets me down.

Email Marketing.

I was looking at my stats for Party Plan Divas today and I’m getting over 1,000 people opening my emails per day. That’s 1,000 eyes on my content. That’s powerful and hard, hard, hard to beat.

These emails I sent to you get 500-600 people opening them, too.

Email is my one thing. It works.

It’s minimal in the fact that I know what to do to make money and it’s the same thing over and over. The other things I do in my “extra” time… hahahaha! What’s that?

Minimize to Maximize

This is a bit of a rambly email.

I think I have a point, though and I guess it is this:

The Confidence to Take Action in Business & Life

Yesterday I downloaded an app to my phone called Reface.

10/10 for fun and enjoyment! I highly recommend.

But this email isn’t about the app.

It’s about me seeing something that was already there.

Matt always tells me he wishes I were more confident because I’m beautiful and I should own that. And I’m usually like: ok sure I’ll work on that babe. (By the way get you one of these kind of people in your life if you can because it’s amazing to have people who love and see you, even when you don’t see yourself).

This isn’t about Matt, either.

It’s about the beauty I didn’t see.

Here’s what the app does:

Yes that’s Gamora, from Guardian’s of the Galaxy, with MY FACE.

The app is super easy, super fun but something I did not expect it to be was super motivating.

Now sure I love the body and sure I’d love to order it in reality but that’s not what I’m talking about.

All my life I’ve struggled with confidence.

I was quiet and literally terrified of authority.
I was bullied in grade 8 which made me shrink back into myself more.
I then had skin issues for most of my adult life that made me want to hide my face.

But these videos made me see:

I see beauty.
I see confidence.
I see possibility.

And the thing is you HAVE TO SEE IT in order to make it happen.

I’ve been walking with my back straight all day today.
I took the time to do my hair in a fun way and pop on a little makeup.
I made good breakfast choices today so that’s a good start on nutrition.

And you know what?

I see the beauty in me.

That’s a big deal.

So is visualization.

Visualizing is a powerful tool to start changing habits and taking actions that get you to where you want to be in your life.

And these videos helped me with the visualizations I just didn’t / couldn’t / wouldn’t get to on my own that I now see as another version of the person I AM but just without all the baggage holding me down and telling me I’m not good enough.

Now I’m not saying the Reface App is a magical tool that will get you whatever you want out of life, that’s a big stretch.

It is a fun app and by chance it let me see the beauty that Matt sees in me each day, it let me see my face on confident, powerful, take-charge, strong women and that let me see myself that way.

I’m going to carry that with me for quite some time.

In case this isn’t clear.

I’m not just talking about me, I’m talking about ALL of us.

How many times do you believe you’re not good enough?
How often do you think you’re not pretty enough?
How often do you think that nobody wants to hear from you?

Well that’s all the things and experiences from the PAST pulling you down.

I know that’s how it has worked for me but despite this I continued.

What if you could see that beauty inside you?
What if you could know you were born with extreme value and it never goes away?
What if you could believe your voice matters even if nobody seems to care right now?

Think about those three questions, maybe try the app (it’s super easy) and see yourself, YOU (don’t try to be Gamora) as the powerful, beautiful, strong and capable person that you are.

Is Creating a Lifestyle Business Worth It?

Two different people told me yesterday in two different ways that they want the advantages of a recurring income business but the work part and the marketing or putting yourself out there part seems sooo overwhelming to them.

I must have put my subconscious mind to work on this because at 4am this morning my head was full of this message. So much so that I had to grab my phone and type it out while still in bed.

I mean this, all of this:
Creating digital products and courses to sell online is a mental and emotional roller coaster of feelings, thoughts and emotions.

Yesterday I had two separate conversations with two people interested in selling online. They BOTH told me they wished there were some magical way that their products could sell, that it would be easy and worth it, basically. 

My reply was that I do, too! 

I also wish someone would just hand me a 3-6 month plan, tell me to just do the work and it would all work out.

But the problem is NOBODY can predict to you how or if it will work out. 

No product launch is a guarantee.No offer is a sure thing. No business model is going to be the perfect choice. 
It’s not like that. 

My one friend thought she had to pick the perfect idea and that she basically had one shot to get this right. 

There IS a method of creating a business where you pick an idea and then put all your money, time and effort into going all in with that. If you can afford to gamble and are willing to pick yourself up and keep going if it doesn’t work out, then sure, do that. 

I’ve NEVER done that.

I’ve never put all my time and effort into creating a business or product that I didn’t know would sell. 

Matter of fact 99% of the time I SELL my products BEFORE I create them (hello pre-launch, time-based webinars and workshops, etc). I want to know there’s an interest and that I can get customers through the program to actually help me make it awesome before I proceed.

So if you’re into high risk and high reward I’m not your gal. 

If steady and consistent progress suits your fancy then you are in the right place. 

You see what I wish you know it’s that, yes, it’s hard. Yes, it takes work. Yes, it’s frustrating and yes it’s a ridiculous roller coaster ride. 

There is a whole industry built on trying to tell you it’s easy or give you tools and products to “make it easier ‘ for you and I think that’s a terrible problem in the online business world. 

The work is your entry fee.. 

Imagine a world where you get to do anything with your kids, family or friends anytime you want. 
Imagine a world where nobody owns your time but you. 
Imagine a world where your income potential is not limited by the hours you work. 
Imagine a world where you have total lifestyle freedom. 

It’s hard to believe it at first, I know, or believe it’s for YOU, but I can assure you such a world does exist. 

I live in this world every single day and I know dozens of others who do the same. We’re not more special than you but we have made a choice, a choice to make it happen regardless of how much work is required.

Because on the OTHER SIDE of that work is a payoff.

But what you’ve got to decide is it worth it to you?

Are you willing to do the work?

Are you willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen or are you, before your even start, looking for ways to get out of it, coming up with excuses, trying to make it easier? 

Look… It’s not my place to say if creating this kind of freedom is worth it to you, that’s up to you. 

I know some people who love having clients. I know some people who are happy to be employed. I know people who enjoy being booked up with calls and appointments. 

And for them the work might not be worth the rewards. I worked so hard to get where I am today. And to be clear that is a just over six figure gross business income earner with no ongoing clients since 2012. I exclusively earn all my income from digital products, a membership, affiliate marketing and now also network marketing.

I have total lifestyle freedom now but I was so ridiculously willing to do any work I had to to make that happen. 

I made that decision AFTER I tried other business models that REALLY didn’t work for me, didn’t make me happy and ultimately didn’t let me live life the way I wanted to.

It didn’t come cheap. It didn’t come easy. It didn’t come without fears, tears, frustration and more. 


I mean I’m not sure I can be any more clear? 

What it came down to is it was worth it. 

I’d do it all again and more. 

My work is not done, either. 

I have more hard work to do as I move to a new level in business and life. 

In my self-reflection, I’ve decided that my upcoming success, my “next-level” is attached very closely to nutrition and self growth and tackling this stage could be 10x harder than any work I’ve done this far but you know what?…

Give me hard. Give me challenge. Give me growth. 

Working a job you hate is hard. Being dependent on others is hard. Having a life that isn’t your own is hard. Being in a toxic (work, family, living) environment is hard. Not making enough money to live life as you want is hard. Not having freedom is hard. 

You already know how to do hard. It’s simply time to pick which hard you want and decide is it worth the work to get to the business and lifestyle you want. 

You get to choose.

Destroy negative self-talk so you can clear room for positive action.

I spent so many years of my life living with my own highly critical self-talk and I didn’t even know it!

It wasn’t until a friend of mine recommended the book “Secrets of the Millionaire Mind” by T.Harv Ecker that I realized I was doing this damaging behaviour.

So here’s what it looked like for me:

No matter where I went or whatever I did in my “real”, physical life, I felt people were looking at me and passing judgement. I think this came from bullying I experienced as a child where that is exactly what happened ever place I went and move I made when I was in school. I’d have this group of boys who slung a name at me constantly “monkey lady” and make monkey noises at me.

So I carried that with me. I thought where ever I went, IN PERSON, that someone was thinking bad things and so I wanted to shrink in order to avoid HEARING them SAY those bad things.

But then I went on to say them to myself. I’d pick apart all the possible things I thought people could or would say about me and think them in my head! It took up soooo much mental space and left very little room for the positive thoughts.

So that’s why I created this video. For the people who don’t realize they’re doing this to themselves or for those who do but don’t have a strategy to stop. In the video I explain the one little thing that helped me stop. I know this may not work for everyone but I hope it works for someone. I thought it was important to share, especially in a time like we are going through right now.

Harder Hustle is Not Necessary and Often Damaging

Times are really hectic right now. The world is weird. But really it’s just life adapting and growing. 

We are pretty much done with “homeschooling”. My daughter is a very stong-willed girl and she just doesn’t get the idea of Mommy being her teacher so

I’m not pushing it. But you know what’s amazing? She’s teaching herself!

She found an app on my tablet that teaches you how to play piano and it’s AWESOME. It’s called Simply Piano and if you want to learn to play piano I highly recommend it!

The piano (keyboard) my daughter is playing below is actually mine, that my son claimed, and I never learned to play it. Yesterday, in 30 minutes, I learned to play C,D,E,F and G and used them in two songs. Blown away! 

For seven years that piano hasn’t been played by me, because I thought it would take too long to learn or it was too hard.

We do that, don’t we? We make things harder and more time-consuming than necessary. We either don’t do things because we think it will take too long or we just make them take so much damn time that we suck all the fun out of it! 

Well… this is something I was talking with one of my coaching clients with over the last couple of days. 

Have you heard of the 80/20 rule? Or Pareto’s Principal? It’s this:

The Pareto principle (also known as the 80/20 rule, the law of the vital few, or the principle of factor sparsity) states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. (Source: Wikipedia)

I have LIVED this rule. You’ve heard me say more than once that I was able to run my business while raising a baby who demanded a ton of my time. In the time I had left to work on business I ONLY did the most essential of things that I needed to do to grow my business – and grow it did! 
That’s why I highly encourage EVERYONE to do a simple exercise:

Take the time you are working on your business right now and divide it by FIVE – Then see what you can get done if you ONLY had that time to work on your business.


If you currently work 40 hours in your business a week, divide 40 by 5. You get 8 hours to work. What would you do if you ONLY had 8 hours to work? 

This is a smart method for you to use OFTEN. Because what happens is we fill all the time we have and we don’t force ourselves to really think about time-leverage, automation and outsourcing until we HAVE TO. 

So if your first response is that there is no physical way you could get all the work you have to do in 8 hours then the next thing you’ll ask yourself is how do you cut out some work or automate it or hire someone to do it or just do it faster yourself? 

These are all questions I was FORCED to ask myself. 

I recommend you force yourself to find the answers NOW – so you can create more lifestyle freedom AND so that you have the answers for yourself when life kicks you in the ass (and life always kicks you in the ass from time to time). 

In 2008 I worked about 60 hours per week and made about $38,000.In 2018 I worked about 25 hours per week and made $125,000. 
Earnings are definitely NOT tied to time worked. It’s about the how smart we work. 

I really encourage you to think about how much LESS you can work. Otherwise we fill the time with work. And I want you to make MORE money in less time, not less money in less time as that would defeat the purpose. Once you challenge yourself to that you’ll be amazed at how many shortcuts, automations, outsourcing and more tricks you pull out of your hat you never even knew you had. 

I can also almost guarantee you’d find things to do with your time that would make you feel refreshed, valued, taken care of – cooking great foods, reading, discovering new music or new hobbies, doing more golf or exploring another activity you haven’t had time to. All those things add MORE to your business, they don’t take away from it. Life is for living and when we bring those experiences back to our business it makes it more rich.

Beat Work at Home Isolation & Loneliness

When I would tell people that I work from home the first reaction is almost always something along the lines of how great it would be and that they wish they worked from home.

I mean it sounds amazing, and really it is, with the total freedom, the completely flexible hours, the working from the couch (or anywhere you want), the making money while you sleep.

I quit my job back in May of 2007 and so I’ve had a lot of years to experience both the good, the bad and even the ugly of working from home. The good FAR outweighs any downsides in my opinion and that’s why for the past twelve years I’ve been completely self-employed and self-sufficient through my own business.

One of the big downsides, though, is isolation and loneliness. That’s real and it’s a slippery slope because work at home isolation and loneliness can lead to depression if you’re not careful.

So let’s tackle this challenge!

I’ve learned a lot from my years at home and I’ve experienced the isolation and loneliness myself, especially after I broke my leg and was on the couch for six months or when I had my baby girl over five years ago now. Even though I see family every day we, as social beings, need more interaction in our lives than just the few people in our immediate family.

Here are my best “Beating Work at Home Isolation & Loneliness” tips:

  • Lunch With Friends – Do you have other work at home friends? Maybe a mom friend on maternity? A friend who works shifts or weird hours? Do lunch! Meeting with my work at home and stay at home mom friends has been a great way to pick me up every single time. It’s so nice to get out with a friend and share a meal, chat about common interests and just have a laugh!

    Me and local friend Jen Hazlett of Alt Admin meet up for coffee and lunch on the regular. I meet another mom who’s daughter is in my daugher’s school and we have regular playdates and chats.

    Finding new friends can feel hard at first but be on the lookout for people you have stuff in common with, business or personal.
  • Coffee. Get Coffee (or Tea, Juice, Whatever). – When I feel like I need to get out and I can’t arrange time with a friend I like to go and just have a coffee at the local coffee shop. Sometimes I’ll work, sometimes I’ll sit and people watch (not stare of course or be creepy in any way  ). It gets me out around people and that’s often enough to make me not feel isolated at all.Love spending an hour or two at the local coffee shop. You could go anywhere! Just getting out around other people will do you good.
  • Events – There are always events to go to. You can go to events related to a hobby or personal interest, or go to ones related to your business. Of course it’s fun when you can combine the two! I’m going to start looking into going to much more events now that I’ve figured out I’m totally able to get to downtown Toronto on the train. A quick and easy 45 minutes or so and I don’t have to brave the busy city in my car opens up a whole lot more opportunity to attend events.

  • Make Business Social – How can you ADD social to your own business? I keep threatening to do some meetups for the Laptop Lifestyle YOUniversity and I just need to make that happen because I know how AWESOME it will be to see some of the members who grace our club in person. That could be as simple as a lunch date, a day-long workshop or hosting your own 3-day conference. Start where you are and connect with your business peeps. You know the best way to make money is with your friends, anyway, right?

  • Join Groups – One of the best things I EVER did for my business was join a membership group for moms who wanted to work at home. I did that back in 2006-ish and I still have so many friends from that group that I can email and connect with on facebook anytime I want to talk with someone who understands what it is I do for a living. That’s entirely why I created my own membership at the Laptop Lifestyle YOUniversity. I know just how incredibly valuable it is to be part of an online community of people working towards the same goals.

  • Go to Nature – There’s something awesome about getting out or working out in nature. In the winter here it’s harder but in the summer I’ve been going to the beach a lot to work. Usually it’s to journal but sometimes I bring my laptop and write or create emails to send out to my subscribers. A couple of years ago the summer I went to journal at a Lavendar Field and it was AWESOME. I need to make that happen again and also pick other inspiring places to make a trip to to have a day amoung the inspiration.

  • Get Your Blood Tested – Weird one, right? You might think you’re lonely and unmotivated because you’re working at home but you could also be suffering from a deficiency in something. A common deficiency for many people these days is Vitamin D, which would only be made worse in our industry because we spend less time outdoors. Our office is just a few feet away and we don’t even get a little sun on our way to work. I found out last year from my own blood tests that I was both Vitamin D AND Iron deficient. Both of those can have big effects on your productivity!

  • Move, Sleep, Eat Right & Drink Water! – Another one that SEEMS out of place but it’s so NOT. Working at home can lead to major inactivity if you let it and that can lead to weight gain, poor meal choices and very low energy. I have clear spurts in my business where I’m on point with this stuff and so is my mental clarity. Don’t ignore your health to build your business! So important. It will help the feelings of isolation, loneliness and sadness/depression when you take the best care of yourself you possibly can.

  • Rent Shared Office Space or Co-Working Space – Did you know that some places have shared office space for rent? You’re not renting a whole space on your own, rather renting a room for a few hours, days or weeks out of the month. Then there’s the whole co-working thing where you work in a big open space with other business owners… pretty cool! I’ve looked into this over the years and didn’t like the idea of paying $50 for a day or a few hundred for a month in a co-working space but I recently found a space where I pay $100 for a year and then $100 per month for unlimited time. It’s been AMAZING and now every day I have my daughter in school or in child care I’ve been HERE at this awesome coworking space!

  • Work at the Library – I love working at the library. There’s something quite awesome about being surrounded by books, filled with information. All I have to do is glance in either direction to get all kinds of inspiration and content ideas! Also, working at the library gets you around others which takes you out of isolation.

Take a Class – You could take something related to your business, or not. Either way you’ll get around people of similar interests and you might make a new friend! I’m seriously considering taking a local hip hop dance call. I’ve taken business-related classes here at my coworking space, too, and met new people to grow my business with!

  • Take Care of YOU – This fits with suggestion earlier on moving, drinking water and eating right but it encompasses so much more. You’ve heard the work at home people talking about spending all day in their pajamas. What about when all day turns into a week? Is that ok? What if you barely shower? What if you’re too busy working that you don’t clean the kitchen and as a result you don’t cook healthy meals (because who wants to cook if you have to clean BEFORE you get to cook and then you have to clean AGAIN?). You see how this can quickly spiral out of control leaving you with no desire to leave the house or socialize. That’s a problem! Take care of YOU. Do the mindset work. Read the books that help you get ahead. Listen to the motivational podcasts. Talk to the inspiring friends (and avoid the downers). Do that workout, shower, get the laundry done, cook healthy meals, clean the house and take time to do things that make you feel renewed, energetic and ready to go see the world (or at least something more than your own four walls)!

I know I’ve given you a LOT of tips. You don’t have to do them all. I don’t do them all and definitely don’t do them all, all the time. I have done most at some point or another. For now I’m actually going to use this post for myself as a sort of to-do list to get out and social MUCH more than I’ve been. I hope it helps you do the same!

What’s Stopping Your Success?

What’s stopping you from achieving what you want? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Hard truth: It’s probably YOU. 

Everything is available to you. There is nothing you’re not worthy of. There isn’t anything you “can’t” achieve. 


You told yourself you don’t know enough yet. 

You told yourself you need a mentor. 

You told yourself you don’t know the steps. 

You told yourself you’re not ready yet. 

You told yourself you need more time. 

You told yourself you’re not popular enough. 


etc. etc. etc.

I know, I’ve done it too. I DO it too. 

Last year I achieved six figures for the first time since I started my first business in 2002. If you’re counting it took me 16 years, let me repeat 16 YEARS to reach six figures. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

There was a lady who basically told me a few years ago to be EMBARRASSED of that, to not tell people because they wouldn’t be inspired. 


Sure I agree that it might seem not worth it to have to wait 16 years to earn what is basically the BOTTOM level of the general definition of “success” but I’m dedicated to sharing MY truth.

Plus my first idea of success was freedom and I got that started in 2007. ⠀⠀⠀


And the truth is I held myself back, stuck in a pattern of difficult mindset stories that played OVER and OVER and OVER again. 


I started working on my thoughts, my positivity and knowing my own worth in 2016 and it’s changed my life. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I want you to know the feeling of freeing yourself FROM your own thoughts. I want you to break free of telling yourself why you can’t and start imagining all the scenarios in which you CAN. 


I hope you don’t wait 13 years like I did!

Why I Will Not “Fake It ’till I Make It”…

I received an interesting email from a very well-meaning lady, and she really got me thinking…

She was concerned about an email a couple of years ago where I mentioned that I have not yet broken six figures in my business (which I have SINCE broken, in 2018 – woot!).

It brought up a lot of advice and concerns for my business:

  • I shouldn’t mention that I’m not making six figures and because it is not inspiring and will make people NOT want to buy from me because they don’t see the value if I don’t know how to do it.
  • My marketing and brand comes off as beginner.
  • I sound like someone who’s been in business quite a while and haven’t figured it out.
  • It would be a good idea for me to hire a photographer or someone to brand me and my business to a more professional standard to create a more colourful, visually appealing look.
  • Being transparent is good, but too transparent is likely to hurt my business.
  • I should focus more on what I’ve figured out and less on the struggle of it all.

There was actually a LOT of advice in the email, this is the highlights of it. I don’t remember speaking with this lady previously but she took the time to offer me a pretty detailed email and suggested I take what I like from it and leave the rest.

While I don’t necessarily agree with the not mentioning not making six figures yet, I DO agree with a LOT of the email so I’m going to break it down at bit and really clarify some things about why I share my struggles AND my successes with you:

Don’t Mention the Six-Figure Barrier

The goal to six-figures is a BIG one. There are many brands of businesses based just around teaching people to get to six figures. There are even more brands of people PRETENDING to be high-earners who are earning little to no money. It’s the truth.

You can look at a brand. It could be super sharp. The pro pics are all over. The color and branding is PERFECT. The business process is immaculate. And you’ll think because you see all that that the business is making WELL over six figures. Maybe they are, maybe they aren’t. You literally don’t know who to trust just by looking at their brand.

One thing I will NEVER do… is “Fake it til I make it.”

YES… I’d love to have a beautiful brand, perfectly put together and relaying the message I want to share with the world but I’ll never do that just to “look” the part.

I share where I am in business because I know it IS inspiring to those who understand this is not an overnight process. There are many of us who struggle and yes, for a long time. It’s not because you can’t blast in and make a lot of money in a short time, you can.

There are, however, many many people who take YEARS to overcome the mindset issue that hold us back. I was one of them and I AM one of them. I NEVER EVER EVER will pretend to be anyone other than who I am and I can guarantee you one thing: I DO NOT have it all figured out!

If you’re looking for a mentor who knows everything and will give you the golden gauntlet from their high pedestal that is simply NOT ME.

How Could People Be Inspired or Want to Buy From Someone NOT Making Six Figures?

I teach from where I’m at. Where is that?

Well… I quit my job as a factory worker, a single mom in 2007 to work from home full time.
I created a VA business that earned about $25,000 it’s first full year.
I grew my business about 30% per year.
I was making about $60,000 per year when I broke my ankle, then had my baby girl.
I overcame a ton of confidence, mindset and just lack of business know-how struggles during those initial years.
I STRUGGLED to find time to work as a busy mom of a challenging but amazing girl.
I work three days per week while the girly is in daycare (plus my “sneak in time” whenever I can get it) and I made a little over $80,000 last year.

(UPDATE: July 2019 – Ella girl is now in school full-time and last year (2018) I DID break that six figure income goal. There was no parade – though – I don’t know who forgot to order my six-figure celebration parade!)

While that is not six figures I’d have to say that’s inspiring. It’s real. It’s raw.

It’s not in pretty packaging but you can learn a hell of a lot from me and I know how to do a lot of things really well!

  • I know how to make over $100,000 from one program (my WordPress training).
  • I know how to add hundreds of people to my list in one go (giveaway events).
  • I know how to create successful coaching programs (I’ve created dozens and have sold over $100,000 in programs).
  • I know how to run an engaged an active membership site (I do that).
  • I know how to work with clients and keep them happy (Over 10 years experience with people who love me).
  • I know how to write copy that gets people responding and reacting (I’ve earned my full-time income solely online since 2007).

So yes, I agree… I need to highlight these successes more. I need more people to hear my story, to know my struggles and how I overcame them, to hear of my successes and see how they can learn from them. I have a TON to offer my market and simply not enough people are getting my message yet. When they do, I’ll break six figures and I’ll tell my peeps (YOU) and they’ll celebrate with me because they’ll see it as a guiding light to show them they can do the same!

Looking the Part of the Successful Business Owner

What I loved about this email I got was all the unsolicited advice. Seriously. I’m not being sarcastic.

It’s rare to get an email from a subscriber who ACTUALLY is trying to help me. Usually, it’s from someone who seems to be trying to help me but really just wants me to do what they want me to do because they don’t like what I’m doing lol.

This email… was different. And the part about not looking professional and hiring a photographer I also agree with. Though I don’t LOVE stock photos I do use them sometimes. I walk the line because I am NOT interested in looking like any kind of corporate site or looking like a big company with no real person behind it. I am strategically using selfies because I have a target market who will relate to ME. THAT is my brand.

No… I won’t ever try to “look” like I’m making more than I am but I also will keep sharing where I’m at because I have absolutely NO SHAME in the struggle. It’s made me who I am, it’s helped me help others, it’s been a blessing and it hasn’t happened TO me… it’s happened FOR me so that I could be the person that is trusted, that can inspire, that can help those like me grow, learn and be the most amazing business owners they never thought they could be!

An Open Letter to Me, From Future Me…

The internet has always amazed me… I remember hearing about it sometime around high school and then by the time I came home from college getting my first dial-up connection. I was 19 and living with my parents but they weren’t that interested so I went out and paid for it myself.

Thinking back that was my FIRST ever “adult” bill… so fitting that it’s now my living!

I immediately became fascinated with the ability to CONNECT with people online. To share. To learn. To find out new things about new people I’d never have had the opportunity to EVER meet without it.

It only seems natural that I’d eventually end up making my living from the internet, looking back now.

And this post is about looking back… and looking forward.

I really wish I could get a note from future me, the one who’s just about to break through on high six-figures into a million dollar business. The one who’s doing things her way. The one who’s so comfortable with who she it shows in everything she does.

Yes I’d love a little note from future me with some tips.

But since that’s probably not going to happen ;), I’m going to give past me some tips.

I’m well aware past me isn’t going to get to read this piece but maybe it’s something YOU need right now.

I ALWAYS share from places I’ve been, things I’ve experienced and struggles I’ve had.

I talk to many people in my business who are experiencing the same issues I had when I got started. This is for the person who is working SO DAMN HARD and believing something’s gotta give. I am writing to past me and I’m writing to YOU, because I have some gentle, useful advice that I think will help you make sense of the immense work your doing that’s literally getting you no where. I have advice that can make things turn around if you listen close and take action (YES, more action) in the direction I’m pointing you.

An Open Letter to Angela of the Past, Angela of 2008-2010-ish:

“Angela, girl, you’re working SO HARD.

Too hard. Or I should say too hard for the lack of results you’re getting… which is almost none.


Angela..you are SO determined, so persistent and so after your goals that you think you just need to keep working hard, keep doing more of the same and then one day the damn will break and things will work. Oh how I want you to listen to this letter carefully because that’s not true and if you really take in what I’m saying I’m going to save you YEARS of frustration, literally (and I know because I’m future you I know what happens  ) 

You and I both know it takes work, hard work, to establish a business online and make it a success but sweetie you’ve gone too far in the wrong direction.

I know you’ve heard that you need to get content out there. To market your business. To let people get to know you. 

And you’re doing all that. 

You listened.

You paid attention.

But you missed something. It’s a big thing but it’s a little thing. Little because it’s something you don’t know you missed and it’s creating so much work for you. Big because this one thing is THE THING that needs to happen in order for all this work to really mean anything.

I know how hard you worked to create those 184 articles you posted on Ezine Articles and did nothing else with.

I know how much time you spent writing and publishing over 400 blog posts in hopes that people would flock to read them.

I know how many helpful emails you wrote to your list waiting for them to respond by hiring you or asking to buy a product.

But here’s what you missed:

People WANT to buy from you. They do. You’re awesome. You know stuff they don’t. They LOVE to hear from you. They loved those Ezine Articles. They loved those blog posts. They love those emails you write.

But you’re not giving people a CLEAR OPTION… STRAIGHT LINE… EASY way to say yes!

You have to make the offer.
You have to lead them to the next logical step.
You have to tell them WHY they should buy from you.
You have to make it SIMPLE for them to buy.

Angela, you are missing the money tasks.
You didn’t include them in your articles, your blog posts OR your emails. They didn’t LEAD people to the next step, the place to purchase, the part where they pass you money to pay for your valuable contribution to helping their lives. 

You are not asking people to buy enough.

It should be YOUR JOB to get the sale.

Content is not your job.
Social media is not you job.

Blogging is not your job.
Email marketing is not you job.

Your job as numero uno in your business is to get money in the door.
Every day.
As many times PER DAY as possible.

While delivering that awesome value.
While providing the help your people want.
While serving in the most awesome of ways.

Angela there’s no blueprint.

Be you.

Get yourself in your creative mode. You can do this. YOU ARE CREATIVE! We all are when we are thinking like a person who wants nothing more than to serve the people we’ve chosen to serve.

I believe in you.

I KNOW you’ll do this.

I just wanted to give you some advice to get you there faster.

You’ve come so far! You quit your job in 2007 (yay you)! You’ve not looked back. You’re only going forward.

I’m so proud of how far you’ve come.
How you’ve turned an internet connection into a career.
How you’ve been a literal pioneer in an industry that most people didn’t even believe EXISTED or was REAL when you got started.
How you kept working when people thought you were crazy or you could have been making more money as a single mom on welfare.

But you had a plan.
You had a vision.
You knew it was real and you made it happen.

The next stages are waiting for you.

They ARE as awesome as you dream.

You WILL get there.

Keep going. You’ve got this.
